Unexplainable

It took a pair of burrowing burglars two minutes to make off with thousands of dollars in donations raised Saturday for the Mesa family of two boys killed in a suspected drunken driving crash this month.

Mesa police are reviewing surveillance video taken from Fusion Pizza, which was robbed about 2:35 a.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Ed Wessing, a police spokesman. From the video investigators hope to identify the burglars, who are believed to be men.

"The suspects entered through an unoccupied business next door," Wessing said. "One suspect broke a hole into the wall of the office, crawled through the hole and opened (the business' front door) for the second suspect." Once inside the business at 5735 E. McKellips Road, the burglars raided the cash register and made off with donations raised for the family of Frank, 11, and Nolan Smith, 6. Police did not have an estimate of how much was stolen.

The funds were raised through a silent auction at the business, which held its grand opening on Saturday.

In a news release issued ahead of the opening, Jennifer Parks, managing partner of the eatery, said the money would go to the boy's parents, who were seriously injured Jan. 9th in the crash that killed their sons.

"As a mom, my heart breaks for Tracy and Frank (Smith)," said Parks, a step-cousin to Tracy Smith, the boy's mother. "Although their medical issues will hopefully heal, their hearts never will."

The boys were killed when the car they were riding in was slammed into at the intersection of Sossaman and Elliot roads. Maricopa County sheriff's investigators said a Nissan driven by Travis Cuevas, 18, failed to stop at the intersection and struck the Saturn at a high rate of speed.

Frank and Nolan Smith died on scene, and their parents and a family friend were seriously injured.

On Friday, Cuevas was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and a probation violation.

Ok, I realize most people know about this. What you may not know is that I was very affected by this. The accident happened right outside my neighborhood and every day, I have to pass by the vigil on the side of the road for these precious boys. I worked very hard to raise money for this family through a Krispy Kreme fundraiser last week and my heart stopped when hearing these burglars had stolen "the money". What I didnt know was that "the money" they stole was not the money I helped raise. As I took it all in, I was relieved about that but also still so angry at these burglars. Do they know these parents just lost ALL of their children? Do they even know the grief these parents are already facing?

They probably dont.

Money can be wicked.

It can seem more important than anything in the world.

I have often thought, They dont deserve any more pain. They just dont deserve this...

But which of us does?

Which of us deserves the test we are given on this earth?

We are here to grow and though my heart aches for these parents, I hope that they will someday be healed and I will be grateful for the day when they once again can hold their sons in their arms.

I hope that we can all realize how blessed we are and try not to take our loved ones for granted.
